What to pack for China: seasons, shoes and small essentials

china packing tips

Packing for China is less about volume and more about a short list of things that are hard to replace on the ground: comfortable broken-in shoes, a power adapter, your payment setup, and the medication you take daily. Everything else you can buy in China, often cheaper than at home. Here is what actually matters, season by season.

Match the season, not the postcard

China is vast, so "when are you going" matters more than "what should I wear in China." A few anchors:

If your route spans north and south in one trip — say Beijing plus Guangzhou — pack for two climates. Layers beat bulk.

Shoes: the one decision that matters most

Sightseeing in China means walking — 15,000-25,000 steps on a full day is normal at places like the Great Wall or Xi'an's city walls. Bring one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes with grippy soles; stone steps and mountain paths can be slick after rain. Add sandals or lighter shoes for evenings in summer. Skip brand-new shoes of any kind: blisters on day two of a two-week trip are the most common self-inflicted problem we hear about.

Small essentials that are easy to forget

What to leave at home

Skip bulky toiletries (supermarkets and convenience stores stock everything), umbrellas you would mourn losing (cheap and everywhere), and more clothes than days — hotels do laundry quickly and cheaply. Leave a little suitcase space, too: tea, silk and small crafts make better souvenirs than room in your bag makes for comfort. And if your itinerary includes high-speed trains, pack a bag you can lift overhead yourself — the walkthrough is in our trains versus flights guide.
